Bet all the buildings in the town centre were erected in the '50's and 60's :? They look typical of that period to me, all concrete squares :|

Grace, late sixties if I recall correctly. Please someone, correct me if I'm wrong.

Stan, when I was there in the Fall those shops by the market were all empty and most of the stalls were too.

Yes, it needs rebuilding but hopefully it won't be by the same people that designed the bus station or that clock that does my head in.

The bus station serves a purpose, its dry, clean, and a lot warmer than standing out side the old threepenny paper kiosk that was the old bus station. Ok it looks like a carbuncle but so what :?

The town centre market development was 1972 through 73, I was a beat bobby then, sneaking a cig on nights under the cover of the building work, not to mention cups of tea with the watchman.

Hmmm, did you go undercover as Mr Bond?

Thankyou for the dates Cameraman.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot... Okay, I'm stretching it a bit but Barnsley did have character back in the day!

Valerie and I visited the new Marketplace during our visit in 1994. Went through the open market and then the partway covered one where the butchers were. Seemed quite small compared to big Markets here. I told valerie "Maybe the days of peddlars' going around street after street with wares and food are gone. Kids in my days in Pogmoor always thrilled to bits when Mr. Lewis the ice cream man came by. Then there was the "rag or bone" man. Then the man selling houseold goods, mainly items for cleaning such as scouring stones and cooking items- colonders, pots and pans. Also a man selling veggies and some fruits. Of course back in earlier days the Gypsies who came by. They promised to tell your fortune for free if you bought pins and needles etc from them. They would swear at you and promised to put a curse on you,if you refused to buy Connie

Does anybody know if any old houses in Pogmoor have been torn down? Dad told me he remembers the ones on the East side of Cresswell Street were built in 1909. Sure enough there is a plaque on one house with the date on. Dad would have been six years old. Also the houses facing south (known as the "Rattlecan") are about that old too. Then there is he terrace which goes from east to west. It was in line with our liing room window. Saw some beautiful Sunsets from our liing room window. One special one on I think New Year's Eve

Nope, you're not thick - or maybe you're as thick as I am. Second photo down is really a clock on the side of a building!

How to start a rumour, Rita....

Brooker. His name was Derek Brooker. Tall, dark hair and lived Darton way I think. Worked in Wakefield according to my sources...

I wonder what happened to him? He was drop dead gorgeous.

Derek, Derek, wherefore art thou me lad?
